Can I recover 'lost' data from a disc?

I have a Handycam DCRDVD106.

I finished the second side of a two-sided disc yesterday (DVD-R). I took it straight out and seem to have lost all the recordings on that side. How can I retrieve it and also what should I have done? Is it not possible to switch discs?

Please help, I am so sad! And to pay someone to try and get it back will be £90.

What may have happened is that you removed the DVD-R from the camera before the on screen prompt told you that it was safe to do so i.e. the camera was in the process of writing to the disc and removing it at this point has caused the disc data to be corrupted in some way.

Unfortunately, getting this data back is not 100% guaranteed and it is a reasonably specialised procedure which brings a price tag to match. There are quite a few DIY software products available, but from what I have heard you may end up needing to try a few and this can also end up expensive.

I would advise you to leave this to the professionals to ensure the best possible chance of being able to find your data. Having said that, I would shop around for the best possible price as you may have a local shop offering this service as well as online companies. There may be some other users who see this thread that have had a similar experience and therefore may have something else to add.

The fact is you don't have to send the handycam to anywhere if you take care, because you can perform "do it yourself" data recovery.

First things first - do NOT continue to take more videos or pics using the same cam (hard disk) in case chances of recovery might be reduced due to overwritten.

The next step - free download some digital camera recovery software and install on your PC or Mac machine. Let the program have a full scan of the disk to seek for your "lost" data.

See if you can gain some.

Also remember - next time transfer files regularly and do some backup!
