I have just purchased a new XR-65A90J Android TV. I have registered it on the site giving the appropriate serial number. Is this all that needs to be done? Do I get an email from Sony?
That's incorrect information, but I understand why your store/retailer shared that since most other brands handle warranty that way (Samsung and LG for example).
Try reaching out to the Sony support reps directly though, any more digging in different places would just confuse things even more.

After 30 days from purchasing your TV, you can contact the Sony support team to check the extended warranty for you. They can either amend and create it for you or just send you the document right away.
