I've had the same problem and I've tried the same things that were suggested here. Unfortunately, the mic does not work clearly during calls. Weirdly i can record my voice on the phone, but only during calls is it very muffled and unclear. I've had too many problems with my Z3 compact and it isnt even a year old. I don't think i'll buy Sony again.

You probably just have a dirty mic. Cre up some chewing gum, let it dry, then press it into the mic hole on the bottom and the one up top. Should pull out gunk.z

I had this problem (poor mic response during calls) with 5.1.1.  None of the posted solutions worked (e.g., turning off Ok Google).  The phone updated to 6.0.1 and the problem persisted.  I refreshed the phone using PC Connect; the issue persists.  I am at a lose as to how to fix this.  Interestingly, when the phone is set to speakerphone I can be heard clearly.  So, its not an issue with the hardware.  There is clearly as misconfiguration that has the mic set to too low a sensitivity.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?  Even better if they are specifically for Marshmallow>

My problem is opposite to what some of you describe. During a call (in ear) the phone works fine, it is when I place the call on speaker that the person on the other side cannot hear me but I can hear them fine.

I have tried the OK Google 'fix' unfortunately, this did not work on my handset.

What seemed to "help" (didn't really fix the problem though) is going into Google Music app > Equalizer > Mic sensitivity > High

While the person on the other end can now hear me, it seems my voice is not too crisp and clear. Apparently I sound muffled.

I checked Google Now voice detection settings but the "any screen" option was disabled. Then I remembered that today I created a Google Now widget on one of screens (the issue occurred today also). I removed it and the mic problem was gone. Though, when I put the widget back problem does not return. I do not exactly what helped me: opening Google Now settings or removing the widget.

I have a new Z3 Compact that I started using yesterday. On the very first call the person on the other end just kept saying "I can't hear you", and I eventually had to hang up and call back on a landline. Not a very good start. I'll try some of the basic tips that I've heard of, like the Google NOW tip, to see if that helps. Why can't things just work anymore? I already miss my (fantastic) Xperia Ray.

I've noticed that mic isuue too. I had Xperia U now Z3 C and all have a bad mic comparing with Samsung. Just compare the 2 phones and see how it is supposed to be heard. Quite a difference. Even the videos recorded with Z3 C have an unclear sound regardless the settings cause I've tried them all. No treble no bass bad sensitivity. Just saying, the Sony quality it's not what it used to be.

The microphone fails and has already been changed and updated software but they still do not listen to me

I had the same problem. Tried to tweak prop.build and mixer_paths.xml but no improvement.

Until... I noticed that the mic hole at the at the plastic band on button isn't placed excecly against the mic hole. I am not talking about external case. I am talking about the original plastic that cover the sides of the phone.

I took it out a little and with Tiny screwdriver that was hitten on the fire I made the hole more big so it will fit against the inner hole.

Now the sound is much better. Not 100% but 85-90%. Before this people couldn't understand what I said.

Maybe Sony did this to protect the inner hole from watter. Or maybe it's only defect in my phone.
