Xperia Z5 compact - Notification bar, home and app buttons awol.

Title pretty much says it all.
The phone ran out of power a few hours ago, put it on change and when it came back on (there is nothing unusual about any of this), for some reason a number of settings had changed slightly and I'm now no longer able to use my home button, the square app button, or slide my notification bar down.
- No recent update
- Definitely not a hardware issue (the buttons make the click and vibrate when pressed)
- No access to a pc
- Prefer not to factory reset

Additionally several system processes don't work. For example when I try to back up the phone, I get an error message saying that backup has stopped.

Cheers in advance,
Hunter

You say you've done a factory reset and the buttons still don't work?

Sounds awfully ominous.

If you have a pc, there is a way to attempt the reset again.

The solution and information offered by virdis was accurate, helpful, well written and interesting.

I didn't want to do a factory reset but it appears that it was my only option.

The response received from uliwooly was not remotely helpful as it appeared a generic response, coupled with the fact that he couldn't have read my original post, else he wouldn't have suggested I use a Pc.

I find it odd that you would go out of your way to defend a person's honor on a technical forum, without having first ascertained whether or not the accusation was valid.

Thank you.
