Xperia Z3 Overheating

Hi everyone,

Even though there are some flaws, I'm really strongly considering getting the sony xperia z3 - no phone is perfect. Some of the issues that I've read about don't really apply to how I will be using the phone. I've heard that the Z3 overheats when taking 4K video, which isn't a problem for me since I don't really intend on taking many videos.

One thing that I do alot is video calling. I was wondering if anyone knew if the Z3 overheats when making prolonged video calls (with google hangouts, skype, etc). I do alot of video calling, often for 5+ hours at a time.

This is the only thing that is making me think twice about getting the Z3. Otherwise I would've had one by now, because it looks like an absolutely gorgeous phone with a great UI.

Hi and welcome to the community! Since you're new please be sure that you have checked out our Discussion guidelines.

I have not done a video call that long on my own, but I don't think it should overheat and have never heard any reports about overheating while placing a video call for a longer time.

Thanks for the reply.

I'm only concerned with the Z3 overheating during a prolonged video call because of the reports I've heard about the phone overheating during 4K video. Since both 4K video recording and video calling is concerned with the camera itself, I just wanted to see if anyone had problems with the phone overheating when using the camera, i.e taking pictures or video in standard 1080p mode for extended periods of time, or long video calls.

Granted, not everyone makes long video calls like I do, so I was hoping someone had first hand experience with this situation. I guess no news is good news in this case.

I use video calling quite a bit when I am in Spain.Calls often last 30 mins and phone doesn't get hot.So you won't have a problem. I have used hangouts,Viber and Skype to do this.Hope that helps

My Z3 started overheating after just a few minutes video recording in the last couple of weeks. It's only 3 months old. The yesterday, while video recording my daughters concert, the rear glass cracked after only 5-6 minutes recording! Not a happy camper!

Hi. My Z3 flashes the overheating warning even when taking pictures. Is this normal behavior? I've also set video capture to just 720p,but even just loading the camera app and letting the phone idle causes the warning to appear.

I have a Z3v (the Verizon variant of the Z3) and have been having the same issue for the last few weeks.

I can normally take somewhere between 2 - 10 pictures before the overheating warning pops up and the camera shuts down. The phone continues to get hotter after that point. Considering I bought the phone primarily for the camera, the issue has rendered the device significantly less useful.

It also didn't help my frustration that the overheating issue first popped up during my sister's graduation!

I reached out to Sony support and will update this if there is a resolution.
