My water damage under warranty experience

I sometimes clean gently my Z3 with cold tap water to remove fingerprints. Flaps always firmly closed, no long exposure and immediately dry with a towel. It should be able to handle it, right??

Last month, few minutes after doing this, I could see water inside the screen and it stopped reacting to the touch. I could also see water drops behind the camera glass. After a night into rice with flaps opened it didn't improve.

For what I could investigate, it seems that the water could get in from a badly glued back panel.

I have red lot of stories of people with water damage with a Z3, in my opinion there might be a DESIGN FLAW with the waterproof in the Z3. Check youtube!

This story has a happy ending. I sent the phone, which was under warranty, to Sony service, and they sent me a new unit in one week. Well done for the customer service!

I think I wont play with water anymore, I am not sure my phone can handle it. Sony is making false advertising with their waterproof phones.

I'm very sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused you but glad to hear you're satisfied with our service.

While i've heard of this before in a few cases, i can assure you that this is not a general design flaw. There must have been something wrong with your unit.

The phone its indeed waterproof as long as you firmly close the covers/flaps and there's no physical damage either on the covers, screen, back panel and/or body/housing.

Unfortunately electronics + water = bad news. The phone is waterproof but you never know if any part of it has failed. All it takes is a microscopic hole somewhere and water WILL get in. When I talked with a support manager from my city's service center, he assured me that they can test the device for these kinds of failures and they will fix it under warranty.

Bottom line, unless he was lying, if you closed the flaps and it took water in, they will tell it's a hardware fault and they will fix it.

That being said, I was my phone under tap water sometimes but I don't want to risk submerging it (even though Sony advertised it as being submergeable), mostly because if you get water damaged your data will most likely get lost as the phone dies and recovering everything is a major hassle.

Unfortunately, my supplier refused warranty at all on my week old phone. I m left with a dead carcass. Thats the last I ever buy a Sony phone. After 15 years of Sonys...thats it. Such a disappointment
