The option of switching off screen lock is light gray in my settings, prompting "disabled by administrator, encryption policy or credential storage". What can I do to switch off the screen lock?

In this case, you should go to settings - security and try to clear credentials and/or take a look if you haven't added a guest account.

Check the apps you have set as administrator under settings - security - device administrators. Reply with the names. You might also have an exchange account set up which enforces you to use PIN or some other measure of security.

In Device Administrators the only app that was ticked was Protection by my Xperia. I released it, nothing is ticked now, but the problem persists.
