Can only hear phone calls on speaker phone

Hi. I did a battery replacement on my xperia z5 compact and I thought everything went fine I until I made a phone call and realized I can only hear the phone call when on speaker phone. If I have the phone in "regular" mode the caller can hear me fine but I cannot hear them. Did something get unplugged when I took the battery out? Or did I do damage? Or maybe can having the battery out cause softwear issues?? Thanks!

Hello @jermzfree123 and welcome to the community!

Try restarting your phone in safe mode, this will disable all 3rd party apps. If the issue doesn't appear in safe mode then one of your apps is acting up.

Hi @jermzfree123, welcome to our community and I'm sorry to hear about your phone. Slightly_frowning_Face

In addition to what @Quester suggested, you can also test the ear speaker in the inbuilt test called Diagnostics in your phone. You can find this test in Settings > About phone > Diagnostics > Test > Ear speaker. Place your phone at your ear and listen if you can hear the sound being played.

You can do the test in both "normal" mode and in in safe mode.

Let us know how it went!

At a guess, the ear speaker has become separated from the mainboard during the repair.

Great info guys! Ill ck phone in safe mode and run a diagnostics test. If that does not fix the problem ill open the phone up and Ck the speaker. If anyone has a picture of the mini speaker can you please post it? Does the speaker plug into the main board or is it soldered into the board?

Thanks!

I have exactly the same problem! Since a couple of weeks, I can only hear incoming calls or that I do, if I activate the speaker! If not, I do not hear anything, even if I can hear ... What is happening ?? But unlike the partner, I have not changed the battery or done anything to the phone ...

I think I broke something in the phone when I took it apart. No luck with safe mode or diagnostics. Oddly when I had my bluetooth headset on while running the diagnostic test, the loud speaker test played fine on my headphones but not the ear speaker. Im going to take the phone apart and look around for something broken.

Hi again @jermzfree123, Should you still experience the same behaviour I would recommend that you get in touch with your Local support team so they arrange a repair for you so a trained technician can examine your phone!

@PLADEBAL, sorry to hear about your phone. Slightly_frowning_Face

Can you hear the sound being played if you test the ear speaker in your phone? You will find the test in Settings > About phone > Diagnostics > Test > Ear speaker. If you can't hear the sound being played here, try rebooting your phone in safe mode and run the test again when third party applications aren't loaded so we can see if any of them is the cause of this.

Keep me posted!

Yes I tested the ear speaker in the diagnostics and it did not work. I looked at a disassembly video of the z5 compact, and the speaker looks like it just rests in the phone. It is not connected to the motherboard. Maybe I bumped it when I took the battery out? Ill take the phone back apart and try to fix it. If not the speakers are on ebay for $6. Hopefully I get if fixed. Ill post how it goes.
