Lately, my XZ1 Compact has been periodically getting into a mode where the proximity sensor screen-blanking functionality is active even when I'm not in a phone call. The result is that if I move my finger too close to the top of the screen (for instance, to swipe down on the notification bar), the screen will go blank. Moving my finger away restores the screen.
Rebooting the phone seems to reset things to correct operation - i.e., the screen stays lit even if the sensor is covered, and screen-blanking is only activated when I'm in a phone call.
The problem is not with the sensor itself (e.g. too sensitive or not sensitive enough) - I've verified that it's working appropriately with the Xperia Support tests. It's that the phone seems to be getting stuck using in-call behavior when it's not appropriate.
Thanks for the tip. Right now, the issue is intermittent, and I'm still trying to figure out how often it happens, and if I can force it to occur. Once I get a handle on how often I can expect it, I'll run in safe mode for 2-3x that amount of time.
For now, I'll leave this thread unsolved, in case anyone else has experienced the problem, or has any insight.
It'll be wise to clean the sensor and if there's anything covering or partially covering to remove it for a day or two
Yep - tried cleaning it. Nothing covering it. It seems to react just the way you'd expect / want it to, in terms of sensing proximity. It's just that the functionality shouldn't even be enabled unless the phone is in "call mode".
