Wifi Calling settings

Dear Sony,

I have bought this phone exclusively to have the wifi calling ability, but as yet I'm very disappointed. Looked at forum suggestions, asked my local operator (Vodafone) and yet I'm still without the service.

Been through whatever menu trying to find how to turn the wifi calling but no success.

Can Sony help or will I have to change the phone to another brand? I actually like Sony but if they can't help with this, then that's the last Xperia I bought!

Hi @PATRICK74 ;

Did you bought your phone from Vodafone?

Because you normally need a network branded firmware (Vodafone) to have the VoWifi activated.

Please read here: https://support.sonymobile.com/global-en/xperiaxz1/faq/wifi-&-connectivity/80193074017be10b10159e7e9...

Hi @PATRICK74,

I can see that you have already received some information from @NunoSEN2 and there are some important requirements that needs to be fulfilled, not just having a device that supports the feature.

In the Nordics where I'm situated, you need a device that supports Wi-Fi calling, the software has to be the Nordic customization, the subscription needs to support Wi-Fi calling (for example, some pre-paid subscriptions to not support this) and of course, the operator needs to support Wi-Fi calling.

Have you tried contacting Vodafone and see what the requirements are? You can also get in touch with the Local support team in your country/market and see if they know the exact requirements for Vodafone. I only about the Nordic market since that is where I'm situated.

Let us know how it goes!

Hello Jonas,

Thank you for the detailed reply which I do really appreciate.

Unfortunately at the moment I'm in a location without land antenna reception, thus, it is why I need the wifi calling function.

I'm regards to your question, yes I did contact Vodafone locally (Malta)  and according to them the operator does support the function.

So upon going back to the island I will take it step by step from there are you suggested.

I was kind of a bit confused because as I had read on web, I expected to find a settings menu function where I would just turn it on and off I go. However it is more than just that apparently.

I hope that Vodafone can offer a solution, otherwise this phone would be as helpful as piece of wood to make calls when I'm away from land!

With Vodafone UK  you need to go into your account online, from there you can toggle the services such as WIFI calling etc.

Once you do that, the phone gets an "update" and wifi calling becomes enabled & the menu for it appears in the settings.

Vodafone UK only offer this to people with Pay Monthly sims (and a compatible handset, some of which have to be bought from Vodafone.  The XZ1 is a phone that does not need to be bought from Vodafone but the sim must be for the applicable service plans).

I can't tell you how Vodafone Malta do it.    It is strange they don't mention wifi calling on their werbsite like Vodafone UK does.

Hi again @PATRICK74,

You're very welcome!

When the feature is supported by the operator, the device supports it, the software supports it and so on, there will be a switch to just turn it on in the Phone application settings.

Single SIM device

  1. Find and tap Phone
  2. Tap the menu button (three vertical dots) > Settings > Calls > Wi-Fi Calling. If Wi-Fi Calling isn't available, contact your network operator.
  3. Tap the switch beside Off to enable Wi-Fi Calling.

Dual SIM device

  1. Find and tap Phone
  2. Tap the menu button (three vertical dots) > Settings > Calling accounts > Select a SIM card > Wi-Fi Calling. If Wi-Fi Calling isn't available, contact your network operator.
  3. Tap the switch beside Off to enable Wi-Fi Calling.

In some cases you will have a switch to change if you prefer to call with Wi-Fi, or if you still prefer calling with the mobile network. This depends on the operator though, but in general it will default to calling with Wi-Fi, which is what users are normally interested in.

@ezy3, thank you for this information.

Yeah, I find it strange that not all operators have a list of supported devices and what the requirements are on their website since Wi-Fi calling and VoLTE are both services that are becoming more and more popular and it's a big plus if the device supports it. That way it's easy for both the Support and the customer to see if it should work or not.

Here in the Nordics, it's quite common to have a internet connection in your for example, summer house even if the mobile network connection is weak (we have luckily pretty easy access to getting a fiber connection here) and Wi-Fi calling will be a deal breaker when deciding on which device to purchase.

Thanks again for your help and have a nice weekend!
