what happens technically when using wide angle switch on front cam?

Does anyone of the Sony guys know how the wide angle switch for the front cam works? What happens technically? 8mpx will be cropped to 3mpx? Will be the switch also present when a 3rd party app is using this camera? skype etc...

and is there still the strange algorithm on frontfacing cam that is making skin softer even when i deactivate it in cam settings?

Thanks for the answers. After watching out for youtube videos from btekt it seems that it gets cropped to 3mpx and then scaled up again to 8mpx if you switch from wide angle to normal. 

Thats not good. i would prefer to have unscaled 3mpx instead of blurry 8mpx also it seems that it can't be switched during filming which i don't understand why as its software only. Digital zoom works also during filming.

i found out that the lg v30 has peaking and manual zoom. so bad that sony does not have something like this.
