Install from unknown sources

Hi everyone.

Ive recently updated to the android version 47.1.A.12.119. But im not sure when i wasnt able to do this.

I cant seem to find and enable the "Install apps from unknown sources"
I know its meant to be in System -> Lockscreen and Security, like many other Android phones. But the option just isnt there.

Had a look thgough the developer options too but nothing about unknown sources.

Has this feature been removed? Or put somewhere else?

@Vildar

This setting is embedded into every app's permissions. For example: if you download an app through Chrome app, you must grant Chrome the permission to install APKs from Settings -> Apps & notifications -> App info -> *app name* -> Advanced -> Install unknown apps

Hi @Vildar,

As @Quester wrote, the setting is embedded into each application in Android 8, so there is not a general switch to allow this from every application and instead you can only allow it only from a specific application, for example Chrome. You can also see a list of applications in your device from where you can install APK files, in case you want to have a better overview over this.

To find this list, go to Settings > Apps & notifications > Tap Advanced > Special app access > Install unknown apps. Here you can enable or disable the function as well! Slightly_smiling_Face

I hope that helps!

Thanks for the replies, i have located it now thanks to both your information.

Didnt realise it was swapped to a per app basis. Shows how long ago i needed it!

Thanks again

You're very welcome and it's not very often you have to use this feature thanks to the Google Play store having so many applications to choose from!

Have a great day!

Good Day

I am using the Sony Xperia XZ Premium. I have to download an app for the company I am working for to use on my phone. The app on playstore does not yet work correctly so they sent me links to download the apk files. I have downloaded the apk file but my phone just say "Can`t open file". I have tried the solution and turned the setting on to allow apps from Chrome as I downloaded the apk from chrome but still does not want to open.

I have had to try and install an app I had from Amazon on my old Z5...

I downloaded the Amazon app store,  chrome needed permission to install which I gave it..

going into the Amazon App store it offers my previously bought apps but on clicking install comes up with a wizzard to turn on "from unknown sources" which of course scrolling down the settings page it takes you to there isn't one.

for a laugh i scrolled down to "apps with usage access" and enabled Amazon Appstore for whatever that is meant to do...  and still Amazon app store stops with  the "Enable Apps & Games" wizzard saying I need to turn on Unknown sources.

I found a website saying how to do it under Oreo  Settings/apps& notifications/special app access/install unknown apps and Amazon appstore is showing as "allowed" (as is Chrome)

but Appstore won't install anything still (i have tried rebooting the phone a couple of times too)

Have the same problem with my phone. Can you give me the clue how to locate it?
