I have had the W995 for close to a month now on a contract from Virgin and I am very pleased with it in almost every aspect apart from one! The problem is as follows...
When I connect to my WI-FI via the W995 I wait until I get confirmation that I am connected and then I attempt to access the internet via the browser provided by Sony Ericsson. After a short time I get the message 'Communication error. Try again, turn off Wi-Fi or contact your provider for support'. I have tried many things to fix this problem. I have spoken to Sony Ericsson and they suggested altering my security settings on the router. I have tried using Opera Mini as an alternative browser and perhaps 2 or 3 times it worked for a minute or two and then it failed. I have searched quite a few websites and seen that an awful lot of people have the same problem without getting anywhere with it. There are occasional suggestions that I have read and tried such as manually configuring the service and putting various IP addresses into my phone but nothing works! Does anybody have an actual explanation for what is wrong and a solution that actually works rather than just a series of suggestions?
I
Is the Allow local conn. setting under Internet settings set to Yes?
yes - I have checked all this kind of thing and played around changing this and various parameters. I am looking for a definitive answer to what the problem is and whether anyone has found an actual solution. thanks anyway!
Sometimes there are no definitive answers because every handset is different and anyone attempting to answer a question may not have all the details.
Any suggestions on this forum are meant to arrive at a solution, wherever possible, by a process of elimination. So one thing I would suggest, is to run the SE Update service on your phone, since it appears that you have tried everything else.
I have updated the software but once again it did not sort the wi-fi problem. During my many searches elsewhere on the internet I have come across several people who - close to a year ago - claim that their W995's WI-FI worked until there was a new SE software upgrade and then they started to have my problem. I wonder if this could be sorted by SE with a new software drop? I cannot find any information anywhere as to when or if there will be any further SE upgrades on the W995.
There doesn't seem to be any information on any new software for the W995.Have you tried the "phone repair" via PC suite or a master reset on your phone?
If it's any consolation, my W995's Wi-Fi suddenly went from working perfectly to not being able to find any network whatsoever! Having tried all the usual troubleshooting options to no avail and advised by SE that it's most probably a hardware issue, my phone is now at the service centre less than 3 months after buying it brand new.So it could be worse....
My internet now works via WI-FI thanks to the advice I had from ...

I created a dummy internet session with no settings and then selected connect to this session and now it works with WI-FI and Virgin 3g network. I do not know why it works but it does.
