I don't think that this is something you can change.  I looked when I first got my X10 (the big one).  Now I wouldn't go back to the more traditional way, so perhaps you'll just get used to it.

You could try the Android masrketto see if there's anything there, but I don't think so.  Handcent doesn't provide that facility.
