Power off while charging?

I'd like to charge my phone with the power off.  However, while it charges, no matter when or how many times I power it down, it automatically powers back on.  Because I normally charge it while I'm asleep, I don't like hearing any notifications, etc.

Is there some way to turn it off and keep it off while charging?

Haven't you update to Android 2.1? Android 2.1 has this feature. It is not possible in 1.6.
