some users are experiencing this issue
you could reformat your SD card
if you want to preserve all the files from your old SD card
ok on your PC
1) open any folder -> click on tools -> properties -> view -> show hidden files
2) mount your phone with the NEW SD card and delete everything (save any file that you might want to keep)
3) swap SD cards, mount the old SD card, go to your SD card, press Ctrl + A then Ctrl C, on your desktop create a new folder, open it, then press CTRL + V
4) swap SD cards, mount the new SD card, open the folder you just created, press Ctrl + A then Ctrl C, open your SD card, Ctrl + V
Yes I also experienced problems with the SD card ie the phone could not read the contents.
What Uliwooly said is correct.
In case you do not know how to use the phone itself to format the card, you need to :
1. Go to the Settings Menu
2. Select Storage (Scroll down a bit)
3. Select Unmount SD card
4. Erase SD Card option is now available and then select it.
Once you format it, the phone automatically mounts your SD card and creates some default system folders on the card.
Note as Uliwoolly mentoned, if you need to back up the data on your SD card, just copy it to another sd card or some place on your PC.
If you have a microSD Card <--> USB adaptor to connect to your PC that would be the most convenient way to copy the files over.
Once your phone is able to recognise the card, you can connect the USB cable to your phone and computer to transfer whatever backed up files you need to the phone's SD card.

As these sections are 'greyed out' and I am unable to select either.
I am also experiencing the same problem after I upgraded my phone with 2.3.3 my Xperia x10 is not able to detect the memory card. The SD card is working fine with other phones. I even tried to format SD card and then reinsert even that is not working. Plz suggest how to resolve this.
Hmmm. It's frustrating.
In my case, the first time I attempted the manual 2.1 to 2.3 update, I unticked the Wipe User Data in the flash tool.
The X10 could not read the contents of the SD card but the PC could and also had some other side effect too.
I formatted the card(after first transferring its contents to my PC) using the phone and the phone could see the card again. I am aware you have mentioned that the all the options in the Storage sub menu is greyed out.
The 2nd time I reflashed the firmware, I left the Wipe User data ticked and had no issues.
Did you use the automatic update process using PCC or SEUS or OTA?
From your description, I could not tell.
May be another attempt to flash the phone again might help. Just a suggestion

Note : Any operator version of your firmware will be gone.
i had this exact problem, reformatted the sd card in my old nokia 5800 and its been fine ever since. try reformatting yours in a different phone (might be an idea to connect the other phone to your computer and back up your data first)
