Is this a question, or just a comment? You might now know this, after finding out the hard way, but to avoid losing your personal data, you will need to back it up before the update - try the 'Backup and restore' application, which will store your personal information on the SD card until you want to import it back on to the phone. Applications from Android Market can be downloaded again for free - go to the Market and select the Downloads tab.
