hot and stuttering in heavy 3D games + video calling

Hi everybody,

I experienced that my XZ is getting very hot during gaming (3D games, in my case "Micro Machines") and on video calls (Whatsapp - with frontcamera).

At the beginning (when the XZ has room temperature) gaming is smooth and playable.

But when it's getting hot, it seems that the SOC 820 throttles. So the games are stuttering, and smooth gameplay is gone.

To video calling: I think the problem with overheat while using camera is known.

I am on firmware 39.0.A.3.30

Is a fix planned in future updates?

Thanks!

How long were you using this apps?

are there background apps working (like facebook, cloud services etc)

it is typically normal for any device to become warm and slow down when used for prolonged periods of time,

you can try to perform software repair using Xperia Companion, if the problems continues

Yes, I have various Background Apps working (Whatsapp, Facebook, Snapchat, Gmail, ...)

I did already a fresh OS install/flash, but no improvement.

Normall I play for about 10 - 15 mins.

I think the heat and stutter comes after playing 5 mins.

Clash of Clans, Boombeach,... don't produce so much heat, but I think those games don't push the GPU to that high level like a "real 3D" game like micro machines.

I have also a s7 edge and iphone 6s plus for test purposes. Those devices get also very warm, but never begin to stutter in 3D games.

Maybe kernel adaptions can improve this.

how about playing after a fresh restart ( or at least 90% battery)

when you say fresh OS install/flash, you mean a software repair using Xperia Companion, otherwise modification of the orignal software can not guarantee smooth performance and support

Even sony is very supportive of AOSP ,, I have low hopes they would modify downright to the kernel level to fix this things.

maybe you can wait for the Android 7.0 , its already started on Xperia X performance and hopefully will start the rollout for XZ.

I will test it today (play with 90% battery after restart).

Yes, I mean the repair from Xperia Companion. I am not interested anymore in rooting and so on... I got old and such things are now too stressful for me 😄

Ok, thanks for your help and opinion!

Lets see if 7.0 has some under-the-hood improvements Slightly_smiling_Face

Ok, I have tested it yesterday with a full battery and after a restart.

First minutes of gameplay is smooth and then it begin to stutter.

The performance loss comes definitely from the heat.

Hi, now I have the Nougat update at least for a week, and I want to give you an update!

General performance:

- Temperatures are a lot cooler --> good so Slightly_smiling_Face

- UI is often smooth, sometimes a bit stuttering

3D Games:

The temperature in heavy 3D games is now a lot better. The device gets really warm, but not as hot as with marshmallow.

Performance in games is generally smooth, after long playing somtimes stutter (when the device is warm) --> definetly better with nougat.

Camera Overheat:

I just recorded a 1080p Video 30 fps, steady shot intelligent active, with object follow and automatic scene and the video was about 35 minutes. without any kind of warning --> very good
I dont wanted to test the whole possible duration till temperature warning.

Video Call --> I have to test Grinning_Face

But I am very impressed, such a big improvement --> thanks to sony!

Now I hope that 7.1.1 will better than 7.0 and that the beast can be a (cool, fast) beast Grinning_Face
