3G Help!!

I really hope you can help me, I upgraded my phone to 2.0 and all seems to be well.  I dont have much cause to use 3g but this weekend I wanted to use Google Navigate.  I connected to GPS but when I turned on my data, all I get by the signal strength is an 'H' and sometimes a 'G'.  I couldnt use Google Navigate because it said that I had lost connection.

I am at a loss what to do.  It seems pointless having a phone with 3g capabilities but not being able to use it.  Can anyone help, I am in the South East of England and havent treid to get 3g since I upgraded.

Hello, when you get a H (HSDPA) that is good because HSDPA is faster than 3G anyway.

Thanks for that, so why do you think I cannot use Navigate?  What am I doing wrong?  I am a bit of a technophobe, but I couldnt even send an email the other day so I thought I had messed my phone up somehow.
