Why won't my DVD/CD drive recognise blank DVDs?

My model is VGN-NR32S LAPTOP.  Any help please.  Blank CDs are ok.  Have tried two different  dvd brands with no luck. the optical drive is a MATSHITA UJ876QJ ATA DEVICE.
