VGN-N38E/W to widescreen TV via VGA

Probably a dopey question (it's taken me weeks to find my serial number to register my Vaio!), but when I link my Vaio to my widescreen TV using a VGA cable I get a normal aspect picture spread to widescreen on both TV and Vaio displays. Makes me look even fatter than I am! How can I fix this? The Vaio is running Vista Home Premium and using the standard monitor driver.

You could go on a diet lol, what media player are you watching it on? you could try changing the aspect ratio settings until you get one that suits probably to 16.9 or 4.3.

I was hoping for a quicker fix than a diet! I wasn't using any media player, as soon as I plugged in the TV via the VGA cable the desktop aspect on the laptop changed to the same stretched image as the TV. I know I need to change the aspect to 16-9 but I can't find an option for this on either the Intel GMA Driver or in the Windows Display options. Maybe I will have to diet after all.

I have the same laptop as you and want to link my laptop up to my widescreen tv and was wondering what cable you are using and where you got it from? Thanks

I got mine at Curries for £29.99, you'd more than likely find one a little cheaper on the web but I'm an impatient bugger. It's a Belkin 1.8M SVGA. They had two kinds and this was the most expensive one, it's a black cable with black plastic VGA connectors both ends. I went for the dearer one as I'd seen people complaining about ghosting with the cheaper ones and this has twisted coaxial cables. The cable works great (make sure your TV has a VGA input of course) but the way I get a 4:3 image spread across a 16:9 screen is a real pain and, since I wanted to use it to display photos on my TV at high resolution it totally frustrates the point of having it. I tried Sony e-support but they just said the TV was incompatible, which frankly sounds like something that comes out of the back end of a bull, as I get a perfect picture apart from this. If you get one and have no trouble with your TV or find a fix, let me know. My TV, btw, is a JVC LT-37DS6FJ and says it supports 640x480 VGA at 60.0Hz vertical, 31.5Hz horizontal; 1024x768 XGA at 60x42.
