Vaio SB fan noise

I've just got a Vaio VPCSB3C5E and the fan noise is ridiculously loud even when idle. Is there anything I can do to reduce it? The stamina setting and "silent" power mode don't make any difference. My BIOS is R2080H4, which is the one that was supposed to reduce the fan noise. Help!

I have also just taken delivery of a new VPCSB3C5E.  The fan noise is fine - virtually silent when idle but "normal" whirring noises when working hard.

BUT, when I close the lid and carried the laptop in a vertical position the fan rattles as if it has been incorrectly mounted or there is an obstruction inside.

Is this normal???  Help please!

I can't notice any rattling.

Is your fan always on? It can be difficult to distinguish the hard drive from the fan but you can tell by putting your hand behind the vent at the back to check if there is a breeze.

Yes, the fan is always on, but "normal" whirring noise and usually inaudible except when system working hard.  The rattling comes if you lift up the unit into the vertical position, e.g. to carry it in one hand.

I suspect it is just poor build quality, which is disappointing for such an expensive piece of kit!
