USB not working

Hi!

I bought a western my book external hard disc, and after I connect it to my computer through one of my USB, but it could not be detected, and therefore I tried to download a software which is called Spindown or stop ultity version 1.0 from western as I thought it could be the driver for installation. However, after that (I don't know whether it is due to the influence of that driver) all my USB were not functioning. I did the system recovery and also reinstalled the drivers for those USB after unistallation of them. However, all the USB are still not working. Would any one of you tell me how to fix this problem?

Many thanks

Hi lilybet,

I suggest that you first uninstall ‘Spindown’ (assuming that the option is available in Add/Remove programs) and then remove all USB devices (via Device Manager), followed by a re-boot, and let Windows discover and re-install the default device drivers.

Dear Rich,

Thank you for your help. I have uninstalled the ‘Spindown’ and remove all USB devices (via Device Manager), and also re-booted my computer as well, the window dialogue showed that they did detect the hardwares, however, the USB s are still unable to detect the external devices. Also, I did the system recovery as well. Would you please teach me other possible means to fix the problem?

Best regards,

Hi lilybet,

Can you confirm whether you can get any USB device recognised – a mouse for example?

You could try the following but it is a long shot - shut down you computer and remover the battery (if it is a notebook), remove the AC supply and then hold down the computer power button for 30 seconds. Leave the computer overnight and then reattach the battery (if applicable) and the AC supply and re-boot.

Dear Rich,

Thank you for your instruction. My computer is a desktop, so should I remove the battery inside the tower? And please let me know how to hold down the computer power for 30 seconds ( I am stupid I do not know the exact meaning of hold down the computer power). Thank you

Dear Rich,

I am sorry I forgot to tell you that all the USB could not be used, which means there is no response when I plug in the external device to them

Hi Lilybet,

You do not need to remove the battery or hold down the power button as your Vaio is a Desktop. Just shut down, remove the power connector from the wall socket and leave for at least 12 hours before rebooting.
As stated previously this is a long shot, but worth a try.

Best of luck!
