How do I transfer Recovery Media from discs to a USB flash drive?

Hi,

I just ordered a set of Recovery Media for my Vaio Flip. The media is being shipped on discs. However, my Vaio Flip does not have a disc drive. I have another Vaio laptop with a drive and would like to know how to transfer the Recovery Media from the discs to a USB flash drive?  I guess the USB flash drive will have to be bootable. The challenge is how to go about transfering media on multiple discs to a single USB stick.

Your help appreciated.

Sorry I didn't see this post before answering your other one!

You don't tell us exactly which Vaio Fit model you have but if you have Recovery Discs, you will need a cheap USB External Disc Drive. The instructions for connecting to an external drive will be in your User Guide which can be downloaded from the Sony Support website if you have the full model number (something like SVF13*******)

Generally the instructions are: -

If an AC adapter or a power cable is supplied, plug it into a power source.

  1. Insert Recovery Media (optical discs) into the optical disc drive or connect a USB flash drive to the USB port on your VAIO computer while the computer is in Normal mode.
  2. Turn off your VAIO computer.
  3. Press the ASSIST button to display the VAIO Care (Rescue Mode) screen and select Start from media (USB device/optical disc).

Follow the on-screen instructions until the VAIO Care (Rescue Mode): VAIO recovery solutions screen appears.

  4. Select Start recovery wizard.
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions.

Hint

  • If the display language selection window appears, select your desired language, then OK.

  • To perform custom recovery, select Tools and Start advanced recovery wizard.

  • If you cannot recover your VAIO computer using the USB flash drive, connect the drive to another USB port on the computer, and then try recovering the computer again.

Once you have carried out the Recovery, it may make sense to made a Recovery USB Flash Drive for future emergencies. Again instructions on how to do this will be in the User Guide.

Good Luck!

Hi Blencogo,

Thanks for the response. I have a Vaio Multi-Flip (SVF15N) which does not have a CD/DVD drive. Hence, I can't  use  the recovery discs, when they arrive, without first buying an external CD/DVD drive. However, I have got a few 16gb USB sticks/SD cards and thought I might be able to copy everything from the recovery discs to one of these storage devices using a spare Vaio laptop. Currently, the Multi-Flip has a corrupt hard drive and most of the Assist functions don't work - luckily, the two functions  that work allow me to boot from a USB stick and access Bios.

in effect, I'd like to use my spare Vaio laptop (which has a DVD drive) to copy the recovery media to a USB stick and then use that stick to recover the Multi-Flip machine.

Are you suggesting that it can't done and I should purchase an external DVD drive?
