HDMI to TV

I have just purchased a sony vaio VGN-AR31M which as a HDMI slot at the side and i also have a sony tv with HDMI on it but when i connect both together i dont seem to get any picture on the TV - i can get it via s-video but its blurry thats why i brought another HDMI cable to hook it up that way but as i say nothing happens - Help Needed Please

That seems odd as the television should automatically pick the signal up particularly via hdmi.

What happens when you press fn, F7 when they are connected?
