AR11M and Optical recording audio (Vista)

Hi, I am trying to archive some of my MiniDisks. But I don't see S/PDIF on the 'Recording' tab of the Sound in Contol Panel - though I see it on Playback tab (and it works). Can someone please confirm that (1) the AR11M supports recording from the S/PDIF (optical) socket and (2) whether there is an appreciable difference between optical and normal audio for my purpose?
