kdl-42w653a - media player crash after update. Can't use external HD

so, i have this old tv and i have been using it to watch things on an external hard drive i plug in.

its worked fine for years but there was a firmware update recently (first one in years), and now the media player just crashes the tv.

It seems to freeze when loading the thumbnails and either the tv restarts or i have to unplug the power manually to unfreeze it.

I'm not sure what to do? I've read that a factory reset doesn't remove the updates so i haven't tried.

Everything has worked fine for years and now it doesn't.

I see the recent update to your TV was released on the 18th Sept this year.

At the same time Sony released software updates for other Sony TV models,

different updates for the various different models and ages of TVs Sony makes or has made.

My TV a XR42A90K from 2022 was offered an update on the 18th Sept, unfortunately people who have installed

this update have faced a few issues regarding some functions accessed via the remote control.

Sony have accepted the responsibility for this error, offered a work around and said the are actively investigating

a resolution. Having said that one month on the erroneous update is still available and no new update released.

Other users of other TVs that were offered different updates on that same date have posted issues on here

reporting problems after installation of their respective updates.

It looks like Sony have got a pretty big issue with their software development team/ programme

and we users can only wait until they release software that resolves the issues they have created.

We may have to wait awhile.

In the meantime you could try a factory reset of your TV, in the case of people with the same TV as me who installed the 18th Sept update said this resolved the issue.

I never install new updates from Sony until at least a month after they have been released,

I always wait and read the Sony community pages and other forums to see if issues are being reported

about the latest releases. And only if no issues are reported I install the update.

Therefore I am still on the older update version with no issues.
