Hi ok about 1 week ago my phones earspeaker just didn't work so I have to plug headphones in to hear people when they call Mic works fine but then a bit after I went to listen to music and it was on full volume no sound then again I plugged in headphones and it worked. The next day I went to see my friend and he had the identical problem with his speakers on his Xperia t so I thought it was something at Sony's end but when I run the diagnostics app and I click test ear speaker it says did I hear sound no but when I do loudspeaker it says did I hear sound YES! So the speaker can't be broken because I hear the beep when I turn up ringer volume aswell (all this happend to my friend aswell) please help thank you.
Russ,
Thanks a lot for the tip regarding cleaning the headphone socket.
I have had this issue several times before, and everytime before it was caused by not unplugging the headset while music was playing (and resolved by doing another phone call with the headset plugged in, then removing it after the call only).
Not so this time, and it drove me nuts. Now I took the safety pin, tried to clean the inside of the headphone jack gently, out fell a small dustball -- and now the speaker and earpiece work as before again.
Thanks for reminding me that it is sometimes small mechanical problems, not software, caches and the likes which cause problems.

Peggie_Py's solution also worked for me. Thank you Peggie!
Before coming to the forum, I had removed many third party apps (in case one of them was causing the issue), had switched on and off the phone many times and was about to completely "reset" the phone. Also began looking at new phone options.
To make it work, I played music on the walkman and kept inserting and removing the headphones while music was playing, kept starting and stopping the music, eventually the internal speaker began to play again without the headphones.
Phone now works OK for phone calls without using the speakerphone.
It is a shame that Sony have not released a patch for this headphone problem, given it is so widespread and causing issues for people.
I am sure many Xperia users have not known where to look on the internet for a solution and have abandoned their Sony phone and purchased an alternative brand instead. Sony needs to be proactive re this situation.
Hope this post helps other people to solve their "Sony Xperia only works on speakerphone" problems.
PS. I see other people have had success by cleaning out their headphone socket, I tried that but it made no difference and the socket was clean (no obvious fluff or dirt). Perhaps it is a combination of hardware connection issues, plus software glitches caused by the insertion and removal of the headphones.
please i've tried different options posted here but none worked for my phone...i hope there is another way of resolving this issue...
turn off your phone. And clean your earphone slot with ear bud and white petrol. It will start work. make sure that ear bud is not so wet and not so dry.

I solved my problem. I tend to have this problem last time. Maybe because I pull the earphones out from my phone too fast and it still in the earphone mode. So plug in ur earphones and tried to play some music or call someone. Then tried to close all the apps and remove the earphones. It works for me. (So scared Coz my phone is still new)
I applied your solve to my Xperia SP and it worked. Thank you. If you unplug earphone while you're listening to music or radio suddenly (as in my case) you can lose speaker sounds. First close the app then remove earphone plug.
