Help-Transferring content to another reader.

I'm sure it's come up before, but can't find a search match, naturally.....

I would like to transfer some books from my 650 to my 350, which has been "borrowed" by son to take back to University " until he gets his own "(yeah, right, been there before). I can see him asking for one of the "new to come" Harry Potter themed ones for Christmas !He vows it's only on loan........... Anyway.........

He's authorized it on his laptop, my 650's authorized on my PC.

I know I can transfer stuff to 6 other devices "mine", but as he's got his own Adobe ID / authorization now, does he have to ................ deep breath...........cancel his registration, I re-register to me, transfer the books, cancel the registration, then he has to re-register it to him again ?

( And, I suppose, go through the whole rigmarole again when he finally surrenders my property back.)

'Cos he'll want to buy his own stuff while away, naturally, so I can't just register it to me for keeps, as it were.

Is there a sensible way of doing this, please ?

I'd be most grateful for any suggestions.

This is a really tricky one. Went through this with my and wife's readers. It seems once the reader is registered on Adobe you cannot unauthorise and re-register. Adobe won't give support as it is a "free" product ( I spent ages on the phone with Adobe, Sony, Waterstones).

You can deauthorise a computer but not the reader device.

We found it impossible to swap books from her reader to mine. We end up swapping books for a time.

Thanks ribarke - so once my son does (probably not a Sony, from his experiences so far, I'm afraid, but Kobo)

get his own reader, and returns the 350, I cannot then out it on my PC and use it ?

Ridiculous.......

So it seems I should forget the Sony software at that point, and just use Calibre.

I shan't be sorry, frankly, but it is a ludicrous state of affairs.

I just wish I could find a reader I like as much as the 6/350, I'd be on it like a flash...........

Hang on, I think he must have been able to re-register it already. I mean , what happens if you change computers ?

I'll quiz him more............

Hi carpetmojo,

I hope I can reassure you, at least to a certain extent.  It is possible to de-authorise both a computer and a Reader device itself.

To de-authorise the Reader device, take the following action: connect the Reader to the computer with which it is authorised and open the Reader Library software. Click on the Reader icon in the left hand menu of Reader Library (so that you are displaying the contents of your Reader in the main window).  Then press Ctrl, Shift and D keys together.  If you then click on the 'Status' icon in the left hand menu, it will show you a list of recently performed actions, the last of which should be the de-authorisation.

The only thing is, if your son wants to use his own Adobe ID, there isn't any way that he can share your content.  Even if you register back to you and download your content (at which point you would be able to successfully read your content on this Reader again), the moment that you re-authorise your son's Adobe ID, your content will become unreadable (even though it was transferred using the correct ID at the time).

Unfortunately it isn't possible to have more than one Adobe authorisation on one device - which is effectively what you'd need for your son to be able to read the content you give him, and buy and read his own stuff on his Adobe ID while away.  The copyright situation sees to that I'm afraid! :slight_frown: But, as you mentioned, you can register multiple devices with one Adobe ID (I think it is up to 6 registrations as you said).  So I suppose your son has two choices: either enjoy your content, but not be able to buy and read his own using his Adobe ID; or forgo your content, and be able to buy and read his own eBooks using his ID (which will give him the flexibility of being able to register his own device (one day!) and still be able to read the content he bought using his ID).

The good news I suppose is that, whatever he chooses to do, when/if you get your PRS350 back  you can certainly return it to your ID (you should have enough remaining registrations!) and all your content will be readable!

I do hope all that makes sense!

Many thanks Drumzman - they don't like anything to be easy, do they !!

I think it's easier if we follow the other post, and swap readers now and then - or open a regular "Recommendations" channel between us, and bombard each other with what we're d/loading next, and where from !!

But I shall certainly save your very comprehensive how to post, thank you......:smileyhappy:
