Surround sound output from XF9005

I bought a new TV last week, how do I get 5.1 sound from old NR1403 marantz AVR.

I connected TV to AVR using the Arc HDMI ports. I can only get audio using PCM output setting on TV,but this is only 2.1.

If I select Auto 1 or 2 it's just distorted noise. Is this due to age of my AVR or is 5.1 only possible via Optical not HDMI?

I am getting around this currently by watching Netflix via my Sony UHD Player and using the Audio out HDMI to AVR and other HDMI for the Picture. I'd rather be able to just use the TV apps than UHD player. Any advice gratefully received

If the hdmi cable between the tv arc and avr works when the audio is from the app on the blu ray player then that implies that the hdmi cable is OK, as is the avr decoding. Have you checked the sound settings via the action menu when in the netflix and prime app?

If I get the chance later  I'll check my tv sound settings and app sound settings

The xf9005 arc works for 5.1 with my marantz nr1604 via netflix and prime etc.

There is some form of conpatibility issue as I do have to have hdmi control enabled on the marantz though. If its turned off then I had sound issues so suggest trying it in case it helps. This does mean the receiver switches on whenever the TV is switched on

Hello @NickBrice,

do you get 5.1 when you connect the Player to the TV via HDMI and send the audio to the AVR via ARC?

I think the internal apps of the TV might only provide 2.1 in some cases.

Thanks I'll see how to I can switch hdmi on my Marantz. The Arc feature does work fine with 2.0 content only in 5.1 it won't seem to decode. I'm currently using a Optical as a work around for now.

Yes if I hook up UHD player to TV then TV to AVR with ARC HDMI connection, then I get Dolby Digital 5.1 from UHD player Netflix app.

Yet I can't get 5.1 from the TV Netflix app I can only get 2.0 with pcm.

Hello @NickBrice,

it could be that the app on the TV only outputs stereo sound. Since the TV passes trough 5.1 I suspect that is the case.

Maybe @dutchice  or @LightFoot can answer that question, they have a lot more knowledge about Sonys TV products. I am more of a "camera guy".

Hi @NickBrice

If you let me know the exact Netflix programme (if you want to reveal it!) and if you have Netflix Premium (I have) I could then try the same thing with my XE9305 ARC to HT-ZF9 and report back on what format the ZF9 is playing.

Ok thanks I'm currently watching Breaking Bad on Netflix.

So basically I can get 5.1 same program on my Sony UHD Netflix app with a HDMI into TV ARC out to AVR.

I can get 5.1 from Netflix TV but only using a Optic lead.

Hi @NickBrice

KD-55XE9305

Software Version starts with 7.0.0-3021 (taken from Netflix Device screen)

Netflix Version starts with nrdapp 2019.1.5.0
Breaking Bad Ultra HD connected via HDMI ARC and I get the full Dolby Digital Plus 5.1

However I can change it to LPCM in Netflix but still 5.1 or at least rear speakers firing.

I’m not sure if this helps!

Thankyou for checking my Software and Netflix Version match yours.

I'm going to try new HDMI leads as all of mine are fairly old.

If that doesn't work I'm thinking it's an issue with my old Receiver just not being able to decode the data, which is odd as it's playing 5.1 fine when I'm watching Netflix Via the UHD Player connected directly to the TV.
