2015 Bravia Android TV Issues

I thought I'd create a generic thread to cover off the issues being encountered on the 2015 Bravia Android TVs. I've listed my issues below with fixes / workarounds and responses from support. All comments and solutions welcome!

1) Hot Swap HDMI doesn't work - manifested by no input on HDMI channels 2, 3 and 4 on the KD-49X8305C. Workaround - reset the TV, either by holding down the remote power button for 5 seconds or by switching the TV off at the wall and then back on again. Further details on this thread: https://community.sony.co.uk/t5/televisions/kd-49x8305c-hdmi-2-3-4-inputs-not-working/td-p/1944435

2) HDD Recording doesn't work - error message states a system update is required but none is available when checking. Hopefully this will be fixed soon by a firmware update.

3) Netflix App doesn't work - this seems like the app has been deliberately disabled. So far a support case has only recommended that a factory reset be performed (took two days to get to that cracking piece of advice.....), with no improvement as a result. A temporary (albeit for advanced users only) workaround is provided by MikeLothian on this thread - https://community.sony.co.uk/t5/televisions/netflix-support-for-kd55x8509c-android-tv/td-p/1945360

4) Sound lag and performance issues after the TV (KD-49X8305C) has been on standby for a while - manifested for me as stuttering and sound / picture sync issues in all apps (youtube, amazon instant video etc) and HDMI sources (PS4, seperate YouView box etc). Hopefully this will be fixed in a firmware update, at the moment workarounds involve either changing channels to get the sync to work or in my case having to turn the TV off and then on again at the socket.

As stated previously, all comments welcome. Personally I'm willing to give Sony a couple of weeks to fix this, but if it's not done soon I'll be sending my new TV back for a refund as it's not really fit for purpose.

Not seen any compensation, but one option is to fight to return under SoG act and get a refund.
It's not easy, has taken me 2 months and my tvs are due to be collected on Thursday, fingers crossed...
Now in the dilemma of what to replace it with.

Hi Chelmersteve,

My KD43X8309CBU now defaults to Youtube upon power up, where it used to be the home screen, but youtube is the main app I use when not viewing from an external source, so I assumed there was some intelligence behind it.

However, as soon as I power up any of the HDMI devces they swtich to the correct source as expected.

Might be worth checking your control over HDMI settings.

@chelmersteve

It may be worth going here https://ssl.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b006mg74/contact and fill in the form. It may not fix your issue right now, but it will help towards putting a foot up SONY to do something quicker (I hope).

I haven't heard anything from Watchdog and I was (I think) one of the first to make a complaint - having been the first to publicly state here that I had about a month ago; and posted the link to urge others to do the same.  Was back when we were "only" on page 85! https://community.sony.co.uk/t5/televisions/2015-bravia-android-tv-issues/m-p/2004255#M32886

No idea if that had anything to do with Sony reversing their decision and offering me a full refund or not, but hope that any action taken does it make it easier for others in the same situation to me to get the option to return their TVs should they choose.

elraouk, did you get a refund from Sony or the retailer? Under the SOGA?

I am surprised that you haven't had anything @elraouk, like you say, it was your comment that then lead me to fill in the form I think, maybe give it another go?!

Just wanted to say to anyone looking to return their Sony and want an alternative I can thoroughly recommend the Samsung JS8500 - I returned my Sony (and I am a hige Sony Bravia fan) and bought the Samsung 65JS8500 - I was dubious about the curved screen but it makes absolutely no difference either way to be honest - the TV is awesome - fantastic picture, looks great and the Tizen OS is a dream to use.

Really love it - NEVER thought I would say that about a Samsung!

In my case Sony were the retailer.  Was a massive battle, just didn't give up and kept refusing to accept their decision to not refund and demanding to have it escalated.  Made them well aware I had talked to Trading Standard and also contated Watchdog and, most importantly, I knew my rights and wasn't going to be fobbed off.

Kept asking for any decision to be given formally in writing, so I had evidence to use in my court case etc.

Eventually they flipped and offered a full refund, that was a few weeks ago and the TVs are still at my house.  Scheduled for collection on Thursday with a refund once they have arrived back at their warehouse.

Fingers crossed.
