Hi Kash,

As the device is not listed in Device Manager I am afraid that I am running out of ideas. I am wondering whether there was a glitch when you carried out the recovery that a further recovery may rectify...

You could have a look in Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs and look for Sigmatel and High Definition Audio driver Package - KB888111. If these are listed then remove them and reboot.

If you have a Registry cleaner you could also try running it.

Is the sound card then recognised?

Hi Kash,

You could check your BIOS settings to see whether there is an option to enable/disable on board sound.

But at this stage I think you need to rule out a hardware failure.

One way would be to download Ubuntu 9.10 ISO and then burn the image to CD. This can then be run as a ‘Live’ CD without any changes being made to your Windows operating system.

Ubuntu includes most necessary drivers, so if sound works with this at least you know it is a driver problem.

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCD

Hi Kash,

There being to option to enable/disable on board sound is not a surprise as most advanced BIOS features are disabled by Sony.

The fact that there is no sound using Ubuntu is not good news and it is almost certainly not defective hard drive sectors. The Ubuntu Live CD has eliminated that possibility.

The really bad news is that the sound chip is part of the motherboard and cannot economically be replaced.

However, the thing that puzzles me, if I have interpreted your posts correctly, is that the sound was working immediately before the recovery. This just seems too much of a coincidence...

One last thing that I would suggest is the BIOS upgrade that is available from the download section of Support (Click Support tab at the top of this page). No harm in installing all of the updates assuming that you have not done so already.

Hi Kash,

Without proper hardware analysis it is difficult to give a definitive diagnosis but I do now suspect that you have a hardware problem.

Your options are to ask Sony Support for a repair quotation or consult and independent repairer. I suspect that if the video chip is defective then the motherboard will need to be replaced and that will possibly cost more than a replacement notebook.

Good luck with that Kash.

Another alternative would be an external USB sound card, but this will be of little use unless your notebook is mainly used in one location....
