I suspect the error lies in the way the recovery software checks to make sure that you are installing on a specific vaio laptop.

Welcome to the club,

Mmmm quite a pickle you got there. Clean the recovery disks and your optical drive with a proper cd cleaning set. Boot up with recovery disk one in the drive and recover the c drive. If still no go then burn copies of the recovery DVD on a quality DVD-R this sometimes sorts a corrupted copy enough to get a green light

Yes this is why a burn't disk may work as it will be without original 'false/true' tags. Give it a go otherwise you are up for more disks at £55

Sony tech support have emailed me, they now say it has to go in for repair, however when i ring them - there automated system tells me it's out of warranty and i have to ring a premium rate number, not bad for a week old laptop that I purchased from comet on the 30/05. SONY SUCKS - I got a top of the range sony TV which needed new buttons within 3 month of purchase.

Surely the recovery disks are supposed to do just what it says on the label, apparently my vaio doesn't know what type of vaio it is and after trawling the net it appears this is not an uncommon problem.

I for one will stop buying sony as its becoming obviouse that there not the company they used to be, they are no different to the rest. I now have to trek in to town on my day off in order to visit citizens advice.

The BIOS may be corrupt in which case Your Vaio will need to go for repair.

Have you tried resetting the BIOS defaults before trying the F10 recovery? It is worth a try before going for the repair.

Make sure you uninstall any Virtual Drive software (like Daemon Tools) and Norton GoBack - these interfere with the EISA Partition.

Resetting the BIOS default values -

1. Turn on your VAIO.
2. When you see the Sony logo, press F2 several times.
3. You will get the PhoenixBIOS Setup Utility window.
4. Press F9 to get default values and then press ENTER to confirm.
5. Press F10 to save changes and exit and then press ENTER to confirm.
6. You have restored the default values and your VAIO will now restart.

Running the Recovery Centre from your hard drive (do not use the Recovery Discs): -

1. Turn on your VAIO. Make sure you are connected to mains AC.
2. When you see the first Sony logo, press F10 repeatedly.
3. This should start the Recovery from your HDD
4. Follow the on-screen instructions for a full, complete reinstall.
5. Do not interrupt the installation even if it seems to have stopped - it may take some time.
6. Run Vaio Update and Microsoft Update
7. Reinstall your own data and software.

Good Luck

Hi brettf and welcome.

Unless you have been deleting or adding disc partitions 'OperatingSyatem Not Found' in 95% of cases means the Hard Disc is damaged or the Windows installation corrupt.

The recovery discs will work to replace a corrupted Windows installation but unfortunately they will not work on a faulty hard drive. Only a new drive will fix it.

You may be able to try CHKDSK to identify and flag bad sectors on your drive but I think you will need to contact Sony Support if you are still within the warranty period for a relacement hard drive. If you are out of warranty it is not too difficult to replace the drive yourself.
