Netgear Wireless Card Question

I have bought a Vaio FS315E and currently have it connected to a Netgear WGT624 router. I want to add the WG511T wireless card to upgrade the wireless network to the full 108mb rather than the 54mb supported by the laptop. My question is; do I need to switch off the wireless network from the front WLAN switch to get the laptop to run on the wg511T card. I installed the Netgear card last nite and a prompt appeared asking if I wanted to use the Netgear application to run the network rather than allow windows to manage it. I ticked ok to that and since then there is no icon for wireless in network connections unless the card is in.

Yes you should switch off the inbuilt card to use the other.

IMHO, the Netgear sofware is a bit flaky. I would uninstall the Netgear stuff and use XP's own wireless configuration utility to control the card.

You might want to check out here if you encounter further problems:

NETGEAR FORUM

At the first install the Netgear application asked if I wanted it to manage the wireless connection instead of allowinw Windows itself to. After that the wireless connection was removed from network connections in windows and would only return if the netgear card was installed. Switching on/off the inbuilt wirelss stuff had no effect. I gave in and ran the restore utility and put it back to factory spec. Anyway how come I dont have a copy of windows on a CDROM with the system. I assume this is to save money but looks like penny pinching to me. Can I ask for one or do I have to pay through the nose.

In their wisdom Sony have chosen to give you a working copy of XP along with the drivers and applications all rolled in together.

I don't believe it to be "penny pinching" though. It enables any Tom, Dick or Harriet to pop in the CDROM and reinstall XP, applications and drivers.

The only way to get a stand alone copy of XP would be to buy one and then go through all of the hassle of extracting or downloading all the necessary drivers which is not for the fainthearted.

And ultimately only get you to where you are now?

.
