Hi @mjkearns51,

Windows 10 doesn't support old camcorders.

You either need to run Windows 7 in a virtual machine OR you buy a video grabber and connect your camera to your PC trough it and capture the video from there.

For your camcorder you would also need a cable like this one: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00OJ8FGIU/

As video-grabber I can highly recommend this one which is bundled with a baisc editing software: https://www.magix.com/gb/video/rescue-your-videotapes/

Hi @mjkearns51,

well, maybe you don't even need that legacy driver. I've upgraded my PC from Win 7 to Win 10 and my firewire port is working still although there's no legacy driver in my system anymore. My Win 10 64bit is using a driver named "VIA 1394-Host Controller, conforming to OHCI" (well, that's only my translation).

However, you might give Microsoft's Firewire drivers for Win 8.1 a try. Obviously they do work under Win 10 as well in many cases. Sorry, I can't find the English version of the page presently. Anyhow, you can download the driver here (direct link for your 64bit system: x64 driver).

Oh well, in case you didn't know: Don't expect the camera to be connected like any USB drive! You'll not see it in the Explorer! Instead you'll need either a video editing software which is capable of reading content from Firewire devices or a software which is specialised to do so. I'm still using Scenalyzer which is freeware meanwhile. There's a download link for an English version as well. The key to unblock the trial version can be found in the ZIP file.

Cheers,

Hi there, I've recently posted this message on this forum and I'm puzzled that you say windows 10 doesn;t support old camcorders as I successfuly captured footage from my Sony DCR-TRV120e camcorder but not my newer ony DCR-HC24E camcorder to Windows 10, this is what I'm having problems with still, can you or anyone please help.

Thanks

____________________________________________

Hi there, I hope you can help. I want to import my videos from the Sony DCR-HC24E camcorder to a Windws 10 computer using the ILink Firewire cable. I have a Firewire port on my PC. I've tried using Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2019 which says 'Capture Device Offline', I also tried the PlayMemories software to no avail, it starts the software (both Adobe and PlayMemories) but won't go online.

I've been directed to this page which suggests for my make and model of camera I cannot use 'PlayMemories Home' software...

https://www.sony.co.uk/electronics/support/articles/00022457

It then directs me to this page which seems to suggest I have to use video capture cable

https://www.sony.co.uk/electronics/support/articles/00028223

https://www.sony.co.uk/electronics/support/articles/00022459

Surely I do not need to use this method, I just succesfully transferred all my old video footage from an older Sony DCR-TRV120e camcorder using premiere pro cc 2018 with no problems at all using an iLink Firewire cable.

Can anyone help please ?

Hi shags121,

I've checked all the links you provided and had a look in the camera's manual too and it seems that there could be a compatibility issue that's causing this limitation on the DCR-HC24E so for the time being, and as far as what Sony officially advise with, using a video capture cable is a a solid option.

Win_88

@shags121 schrieb:

Hi there, I've recently posted this message on this forum and I'm puzzled that you say windows 10 doesn;t support old camcorders as I successfuly captured footage from my Sony DCR-TRV120e camcorder but not my newer ony DCR-HC24E camcorder to Windows 10, this is what I'm having problems with still, can you or anyone please help.

sorry, I haven't seen your earlier post. Whatsoever, I'd say that Win 10 and Firewire/i.Link do work together quite well, however, as Microsoft does not offer own Firewire drivers anymore you actually do need a driver provided by the respective hardware manufacturer or at least a driver working with your hardware. In case you've upgraded from an earlier version of Windows your old drivers should work still, though.

In case you neither possess any driver nor can find anyone you might give Microsoft's legacy driver for Win 8.1 a go: You can download that one here.

Strange is that you're obviously able to use i.Link (i. e. Firewire) with your DCR-TRV120E but not with your DCR-HC24E. Sorry, I've got no idea what might be causing this.

Okay, instead of trying this'n'that in respect to your system I'd suggest that you'll give this rather old software a try. It's still working fine for me on my Win 10 Pro 64bit system (upgrade from Win 7). You'd simply need to download the ZIP-file (English version available) and unpack it into a directory of your desire (no installation necessary so your system will remain untouched). When starting the programme for the first time it'll ask you for a key which you'll find within the file "license.txt". Anyhow, even this software needs some Firewire driver but it's rather forgiving

Once running you should be able to control any camera linked to your PC via Firewire/i.Link and to save its videos to DV AVI-files.

Hopefully that programme will be of any help.

Cheers

darkframe
