Can't save new phone numbers to contacts

Hi all,

wheh I try to save a new contact, and I choose "keep local" and press "save" the contact appears. But when I close it and open the contacts list, the contact just isn't there.

Strange is that when this contact calls the contact name appears on screen all right - which proves that somewhere it has been saved.

However, I just can't make it appear.

And YES, I DID filter contacts to show ALL contacts.

Hi and welcome to the community!

Under the filter options, also make sure that the option "Online contacts" is not enabled. From what you are describing it sounds like it's the filter that's active.

yes, online contacts are not checked.

I downloaded the PC comanion and found that this program can see the contacts I tried to save on the phone, albeit they don't show up in the contacts list. I can edit them - but ow can I make them show up?

Under filters, by the way, there is no option show "phone contacts", just SIM and all contacts.

That's strange. You should have an option there called "Local contact" and under this option you will by default have these options:

Colleagues

Friends

Family

All other contacts

Try creating a backup of your contacts to the internal storage from Contacts -> [menu] -> Exports contacts. Then go to Settings -> Apps -> All and clear data for the apps "Contacts" and "Contacts Storage". Then try to import the backup again from Contacts -> [menu] -> Import contacts.

well, when I choose "export contacts" only 1 contact is exported. When I choose "select several" and I select all and go back to the menu, again, only one contact is exported.

when I clear the caches of contacts storage and contacts apps, and i try to import the internally saved contact, nothing happens, contacts stay empty.

Depending on which software you use to check the backup you may only see the first contact in it. Copy the backup from the phone (it's located under System -> PIM) to your PC, right click it and select "Open with" and then use Wordpad. Do you see your contacts in the file?

yes, they seem to be all there when seen in wordpad.

However, when I try to imort them, nothing happens, contacts remain empty.

Did you try to clear data (not only cache) for "Contacts" and "Contacts Storage"? Also try restarting the phone after clearing data for these two.

OK, I tried "clear data" for both contact apps, restarted the phone and tried to import contacts from the internal memory.

After about 2-3 minutes the contacts appear populated but the symbol to the left of the name looks like a little SIM card.

I did, however, I am sure choose "from internal memory". it seems the app imports from the SIM card when the import from internal memory fails.

the interesting thing is that when using the pc companion I see only three contacts, namely those which I added on the phone and which then "disappeared". As PC companion shows they have not disappeared, but they are there. I don't see the SIM contacts which populate my contacts app now.

When you imported the backup from the internal storage, it never asked you where to import to the contacts to?

When you import contacts it should ask you which account (for example Local contact, Gmail) you want to import them to. It sounds like the phone imported the contacts from the internal storage and saved them to your SIM card in this case.

Could you try to repeat the previous steps but without the SIM card inserted? Turn off the phone, remove the SIM, start the phone, clear data for contacts and contacts storage, restart the phone (still without SIM) and then import the contacts.

I have heard of some SIM cards forcing the phone to use the SIM as contacts storage so perhaps that's the case here.

Well I have done what you suggested, removed the SIM card, cleared data, tried to import contacts from internal memory.

Result: nothing happens. No asking where to import the contacts to.

Also, under filters, there#s no longer any option which contacts to show.

another detail:

the calls list is also empty when removing the SIM card. Is that correct?

The call list is in some cases stored on the SIM card.

Do you know if your phone is branded for an operator? I'm afraid there's either something wrong with your phone or it's using operator specific software where the operator has removed the option for local contacts.

Let me assure you that the phone worked all right until about a month ago. Since then I am without contacts!

The phone works with SIM contacts only.

Can you help me sort out the files that are responsible for storing and retreiving contacts on the phone?

First try restarting the phone in safe mode to make sure the issue is not caused by a downloaded 3:rd app. In safe mode the phone will start without loading any downloaded apps.

If the issue remains in safe mode i recommend that you perform a repair of the phones software using PC Companion but please note that this will delete all data in your phone. You can find the repair option under Support zone -> Software update -> repair phone in PC Companion.
