X8 data Using too much data???

Hi all.

HELP Please.

My wife has a new X8 and the data usage is through the roof. 9Mb over night while we are asleep!!!

I have an xperia arc and probably do more stuff that requires data usage and I'm no where near those levels, I've checked over her setting and running apps closed all I can and turned off the auto update but it is still chewing through data.

Is there a good app to see what is using this data?

Have I missed something?

Do all of the x8 do this?

Is the only option to turn off the data? this is a poor option as it has to be toggled when not in wifi and I'd rather it be automatic, she has 100Mb per month and this should be plenty for checking emails when not in wifi range.

Is there a fault with her handset??

Any help and advice would be welcome, mostly in tracking down the app that is the culprit.

Hi, guess the best option is to turn off data traffic when not in used. Goto Settings>Wireless & networks>Mobile networks, untick Data traffic.

The other option is to install a widget for data traffic which is easier and faster, search Market with keywork 'APN Switch'.

I agree with Gwhispererz on this.

However one thing I would like you to check, Go the Settings > About phone > Software Download > Untick Auto Search.

Let me know if this changes anything.

Thanks for the replies and suggestions guys, Both I have done already.

However this is like buying a brand new car and only being able to use the radio when parked. Irritating.

She has 100Mb available per month, this should be enough for collecting emails and a bit of facebook when not in WIFI range. As 75% of the time is spent within wifi range this should easily be enough.

So it would be really nice just to leave the 3g switched on, for it to run automatically when needed. Not a big ask as my xperia arc manages it without chewing through data.

If it managed to use 9Mb over night when no one was using it could this be a fault?

The phone is on the O2 network and is locked to them could it be a network problem?

If the phone was on the edge of a wifi signal would the dropping in and out cause the problem?

It's most annoying so any advice would be welcome.

i guess u need an unlimited data plan, or else when ur done using the net on ur phone, switch off data traffic

Just a suggestion, since phone is not needed during the night, disable data traffice (a saving of 9 MB X 30 days = 270 MB). You have an option to switch it off too.

It could be some apps running in the background 'eating' into your data and also very minimum by the Mobile Network too.

I still think that enable data traffic when needed is a better option, it improves the battery performance too.

The point is I don't want to have to keep turning it on and off and if it's setup properly I shoudn't have to.

I've disabled all the automatic updating and other stuff that will use data, so the only thing it will do is search for email every 30 mins when not in wifi and possibly some facebook browsing. So the lowest data plan is fine for that, I shouldn't have to pay for the "all you can eat data plan" and I can't afford to either.

If other phones in the same range can acheive this then why can't the X8?

One more!

Swap both SIM Cards, monitor both phones data usage for a few nights. You should be able to tell whether it is a Network Operator's issue.

Post your finding here for further analysis/discusson.

Didn't swap sim cards as we areon the same network. However, today I backed up the phone and did a repair/re-install of 2.1 and fingers crossed it has sorted the problem as data use is right down tonight will be the test as it used 5 Mb last night and it was connected to wifi. the handset is back to where it was, the only app installed is the 3g monitor. the only thing different is that I haven't synced to facebook.

Will report tomorrow.

The other possible cause could be installed apps accessing the internet in the background.

As long as you get your issue resolved, whenever method does not matter.

SORTED!!!!

The phone is now working without having to toggle the data on and off.

Reloading the firmware did the trick it only used 1kb over night and 4kb all day yesterday while we were out. The fact that the phone was "stock" and had no apps on it was why it was such an issue with me, the only app that we put on there was a data watch dog to see what was being used.

The only thing that hasn't been restared is Timescape maybe this was the culpit??

Anyway happy now, thanks for all the suggestions.
