Having downloaded a track I can't find any option in contacts or settings where I can assign a custom ringtone ... There are no error messages.

are you certain?

phonebook > select a contact > edit contact > ringtone > tap on the Music note > select the song

I still can't find anyone of adding the ringtones to the Sony default ringtone list - is it not possible to add custom tones to the defsult list on the Exeperia E ?

I can access the music as a music file but there seems to be no way of getting it added to the ringtone list....

Are you able to see and play those ringtones with the walkman app? if not then you have to change the format or use a different app to create the ringtones, try ringdroid
