Bluetooth - A Definitive Answer Mini/Mini Pro

I am often on this forum (and a couple of others) trying to help people with their queries with their new phones. Now I am asking for your help. Can you please confirm whether you can receive files on your phones via bluetooth.

It appears that once you have the app Bluetooth file transfer, you can in fact transfer from your phone.

I also understand that you can use your device to 'look' at the other persons device.... Is that the case and if it is can you then copy a file over eg access their media files and pull across a photo?

On the big X10's the system seems to work fine both ways so I don't want to keep saying to Mini users that yes you can if in fact no-one can confirm to me that they have been able to receive on the phone. It would make sense of so many people having problems with it.

Thank you for your replies. If we can clear it up then I can go back to giving good concise advice and not leading people with mini's up the garden path.

SUZE I use Xperia X10 Mini Pro and I can recieve files from another blutooth device. Like you said I have to browse for the files in the other phone on my Xperia and has to do a copy paste onto my SD card.

OK I was very kindly answered by a chap on another forum.

So to clarify once and for all....

X10 (Rachel/biggun) can send and receive no problem.

X10 Mini/Mini Pro need to download Bluetooth File Transfer from the market.
You will need both phones to be visible / discoverable and then pair them using the password in the normal way.
You will then be able to send to other phones.
You will also be able to view other phones contents under the Remote Files tab and then selecting the phone you are targetting and browsing their files. When the particular file is found just tick the box next to it, then press Menu, Edit, Copy then go to Local Files tab and save it where you want it. You will need to disconnect from the device once you have the file you want. Menu>More>Disconnect.
You cannot directly recieve files on the mini's.
There is an exception to this rule however.... if both phones are running Bluetooth File Transfer app then you can send and receive between them (this is not exactly practical tho as many of your friends won't have this!)

Also just to cover laptops/netbooks with bluetooth capability. You have to move the file you want to copy to the Bluetooth File Transfer file on you laptop/net book as this is where the phone will 'look' using the BTFT app.

I would also add that the use of a file manager on the phone is a very useful tool when looking for files on your own phone and moving them around. Astro or Linda are both good. Astro tips it in that it has its own image viewer so you can see a thumbnail of your image.

Jeff/Martha is there anyway to put this info under the Asterisk at the top of discussions.

Hopefully 2.1 will mean this is solved so it won't need to be there for long!

I really think bluetooth is one of the most useful features in a phone. I want my little X10 mini to be able to transfer/receive without a 3rd party app.

I wasn't able to send or receive Bluetooth files on Biggun until I downloaded Bluetooth File Transfer. Should I have been able to do so...? Anyway, as Suze says, this should cease to be a problem when 2.1 is released later this month.

I agree that it would be a good idea to make this thread a 'Sticky'.

I wasn't using BTFT app in those pics so you must be able to do it on big X10 without the app. Just got to get the sequence of events right I think. Dont believe I downloaded the app til afterwards.

Ah, yes, I remember that thread. I was never quite sure where the emphasis was meant to be on your "Er...now you are asking!?" comment. I was a little scared by it but I did try again with no success. Then BTFT came to my rescue and I forgot about it.

Awww bless you for saying so! I think everyone probably really says, Oh for goodness sake that blooming Suze is everywhere with nothing much to say!

Everyone has to have a hobby tho and I decided that this year I would give the base jumping, white water rafting and cave diving a miss:smileywink:

Well my experience sounds a little bit different, so I share it:

Out of the box, with my X10 mini pro I can recieve files via bluetooth from my laptop (linux) without installing Bluetooth File Transfer.

I send the file, and the phone asks me to accept it or not. Perfect. What I can not do is send files anywhere from my phone, since for example in Album,

there is no bluetooth option when you hit the Send icon. Then, installing Bluetooth File Transfer, I can try to send files, but anyway it never gets to complete the process.

I dont need to send files via bluetooth that much, so it's ok for me to wait for the update, but at least I expect SE to solve all this issues with a fully functional bluetooth system...

Hi. Know i'm a little late with this thread. But bluetooth was already installed on my mobile straight from the box. And this has been my favourite thing to move music, pictures and contacts from PC and mobiles for a few year now.

Hello, I'm sorry if this is kind of a dumb question but How will I download the Bluetooth File Transfer? I did download it to my laptop and just paste the file to my phone ( x10 mini pro) But I couldn't see the application in my phone. Then, I tried connecting to the internet through my phone so I'll try download the file directly to my phone but I couldn't access the net. Maybe I'll try to connect to a wi-fi. Right now I got no access to any wi-fi, so maybe tomorrow. Thanks for the attention. Lol.

The best way to download Bluetooth File Transfer is from the Android Market app on your phone not on your PC. This will install it for you automatically afterdownload.

If you don't have the Android Market on your device you may have SAM/Slide Me app instead http://slideme.org/applications?text=file%20manager.

On this search for a file manager to download which will then let you access your SD card and find the Bluetooth File Transfer .apk file to install.

Also, can I ask a question about wi-fi here? Anyway I'm already asking so it's worth trying. I know you could still help me.

So, I tried connecting to the wi-fi in our school so I could download the Bluetooth File transfer but an expert said to me that my phone got no proxy settings. My phone is xperia x10 mini pro. Thanks!

I am no technical expert but the phones don't support certain wifi security settings and I have read other threads about students not being able to connect to schools/universities wifi networks. If you can find another free/open wifi hotspot you should be able to connect there. For example in the UK many of our McDonalds have free wifi available.
