I have a KD-49XG9005 connected by HDMI (ARC) to a Sony STR-DH790 amplifier and Youview set top box. I have a problem in getting the audio to be seen to be correctly routed. When switching on to use the Youview box (I use a Harmony 650 remote). The audio is always routed correctly to the amplifier but the tv shows alternately the messages ‘tv speakers active’ and ‘audio system active’ at each switch on. Although the sound always comes through the amplifier if I look at the tv menu it shows that either the tv speakers or the audio system speakers are active (dependant on the tv message displayed). It seems that although the sound is routed correctly the tv does not always recognise this!

I also have a problem in that if I use the tv tuners at switch on (using the Harmony to set inputs etc) I have to reset the amplifier input to ‘tv’ as the tv sends a command to the amplifier to change its input to ‘mediabox’ during its start up sequence.

any help or guidance will be appreciated.

Ian

Hi Ian,

Have you tried a different HDMI cable? You can also go to TV Settings - Sound - Speakers to tell the TV what to use. If you want the sound to come out of the TV speakers, don't connect the amplifier to HDMI ARC and use a normal HDMI port instead.

Win_88

No, I’ve not yet tried a different hdmi cable. All works well but the only problem seems to be alternate display of audio or tv speakers active at each switch on. I know I can change the speakers in the tv menu but even though it shows as tv speakers active they are not, the audio system speakers are always the ones being used! I’ll try a different hdmi cable and see if it helps.

thanks

Ian

Hi, I’ve tried another, completely different cable with no change. I’ve tried changing delays and switch on order on the Harmony 650 and nothing helps. At each switch on the tv displays either ‘audio system active’ or ‘tv speakers active’ (alternate at each switch on). Whichever is displayed as active makes no difference, all sound correctly comes out of the audio system. If I go to the tv speaker option and it is showing ‘tv speakers’ changing to ‘audio system’ there is a changeover discontinuity period and the sound continues (correctly) from the audio system (and is displayed as such). I realise that I should ignore this but I’d like to know why the tv gets things wrong!

It must be something to do with the hdmi handshake, but as both devices are Sony surely I can expect that they will work together correctly?

Ian

Hi, this problem has been with me for a long time. I have, at different times, reset both tv and amplifier. Both have latest software fitted (tv is actually a replacement for on which developed a different fault). I don’t really want to carry out reset again as it’s time consuming to set everything up again (though I have regularly restarted the tv).

I have carried out a further trial using only the tv controller. Despite hdmi control for standby and on/off being disabled on both devices, if I turn on the tv, the amplifier is turned on immediately if the tv showed ‘audio system active’ at its last use, and after about 15 seconds I get the incorrect banner ‘tv speakers active’. If at last use the tv was at ‘tv speakers active’ then after about 10 seconds the amplifier switches on and the correct ‘audio system active’ banner is displayed!

So, I have forced the amplifier to turn off 3 seconds before the tv (using the Harmony 650), this causes the tv to set ‘tv speakers active’ before it turns off. This then works correctly at each subsequent switch on.

As for the other selections (using Harmony 650, eg freeview and freesat on the tv) they always start correctly if the tv was previously started by using the ‘youview’ selection, otherwise they fail to select correctly. I’m happy to leave this as is at the moment but I am convinced that there is some form of hdmi control problem in my set up.

This is all quite confusing and I’ll perhaps come back to it when I’ve nothing else to do!!!!

many thanks for your interest,

Ian

Hi, slightly late to the party but having exactly the same issue with the 49XG9005 with a Q Acoustics M3 soundbar. Have you managed to find a solution?

I bought this TV around November 2019, and everything was fine, however after the latest firmware update around January if i remember correctly, this started happening. The sequence of events is:

- Switch tv on

- Soundbar goes on

- After 2-3 seconds, soundbar goes off

- TV shows 'tv speakers' active.

I can manually wake the soundbar up by going to the menu -> speakers -> audio system. Also, if I switch the TV off and then on immediately, the soundbar wakes up by itself. Sounds like this tv needs a patch.

The issue sounds a lot like one i found here: https://www.sony.co.uk/electronics/support/articles/00223423

however this is for 2016-2018 models.

You seem to have a similar problem. I’m convinced that for me the problem is in the way that hdmi communications function. I have to ensure that I turn off the amplifier 3 seconds before the tv is switched off (I’m using a Harmony 650 remote). This then ensures that the tv goes through a full check at switch on and eventually sets the tv to ‘audio system active’. Switching the amplifier off first sets the tv to ‘tv speakers active’ which seems to ensure that all is set up correctly at next switch on. Not ideal and Sony really should do something about the way it handles hdmi (Bravia) communications.

good luck

Ian

Hi - I'm having the exact same problem with my Q M2 soundbase on the same TV. Did you find a solution? I'm wondering if I should factory reset to the previous version of android and see if that cures it.

Appreciate any advice you can give...

Dom

Eventually I reverted to using Bravia sync for the tv to amplifier control. Now when the tv turns on it then turns on the amplifier. Tv turns off and amplifier turns off. My Harmony turns on the tv and the amplifier follows. I had to generate new tv ‘buttons’ to set the amplifier inputs correctly (as the amplifier no longer appears in the activity). At last all appears to be running correctly!
